None of these blogs appears to have a theme except perhaps a vague ego driven one. What is the motivation for this type of blog? Challenge? Whimsy? Hubris?

I think that you need to read them more closely.
Lynch uses his blog as an integral part of his scholarly research agenda. He also has occasional whimsical posts, but they only improve things! Finley uses his for some of the best essays that the internet has to offer.
Davis and Smith are harder to categorize, but just as worthwhile to read.
Challenge. Whimsy. Hubris. Hmmmm. Seems like a great motto for EpBlog!

If you found a really cool picture of an optical illusion on the Internet, what would you do it? Show it to the person at the computer next to you? Send it by e-mail to all of your friends? Why, no — put it on your blog, of course!
And most of the people who read my blog are family and friends, so I have no reason to need a particular category; I just post things that I think are interesting and that other people might find interesting.

People who don’t write about one focused subject and instead just ramble on about anything at all make me sick.
Their ego driven babblings disgust me. How dare they. It takes some nerve, those people.
