David suggested that people really do like seeing pictures of Williams College, so I’ll provide you with some on Fridays. I am studying at Williams-Mystic this semester, so I might put in some pictures of Mystic every so often, too. Tell me what you’d like. Feel free to identify the photos; I think it’s more fun if I don’t do it for you.

Given the angled brick entrance, it looks like somewhere on Spring Street, I think the block that got put up after the Williams Co-op burned down. But I don’t know exactly where it is or which one of the many gone-out-of-business storefronts it replaced. (Still bummed that The House of Walsh went under.)

Diana, keep ‘em coming. And as for my requests, please show whatever that is which has turned up at the foot of Spring Street in the former gas station location…….an eatery?

we’ll assume this one is too easy for current/recent students, so they shouldn’t answer…

Well, Guy, this one wasn’t really a guessing game, as it says right in the picture what it is — the Spice Root. The Spice Root is approximately across from Papa Charlie’s Deli, down the street just a bit from what would be across from the gym (Goff’s). I don’t know where the Williams Co-Op used to be, sorry. You could venture guesses as to what the Spice Root is, I suppose.
As for what is at the bottom of Spring Street, I would gladly photograph it if I were in Williamstown, but alas, I am not. I may visit Williams with a camera, and if so, I will take a picture of it. Until then, if you’re looking at it from the street, Where’d You Get That is on the left, Tunnel City Coffee is on the right, and an ATM and a stairway are between. Up the stairway are some of the offices (payroll is one of them) and some apartments for faculty or staff. It is called the B&L building, and it is brick. The college has a picture of it here, but that is not what it looks like from the street at all; that must be the back.

The Williams Co-op was an extremely small version of the Harvard Coop, in that it was a general purpose store for students and carried sports gear, clothing, and college-branded stuff. Goff’s now has a lock on Williams gear, but it wasn’t always that way.
The wooden building it was in burned down around 15-20 years ago, and from your description, Spice Root is housed in its replacement.

Diana,
THe picture you referenced on the college’s website is the old “B&L” building, pre-demolition to put up that oversized starbucks you guys have now.
The B&L was a car service station. The college briefly used the building for an art display before knocking it down.

as both a williams-mystic and williams alumna, I’d actually rather see the mystic photos . . . .
