Interesting article on the latest job for Trustee Stephen Harty ‘73.

The American operations of a leading British agency, Bartle Bogle Hegarty, will for the first time be led by an American.

Bartle Bogle is known for irreverent campaigns for blue-chip marketers like Diageo, Levi Strauss and Unilever as well as for a close-knit internal culture. Founded in London in 1982, the agency opened its American operation, in New York, in 1998.

Joining Bartle Bogle in New York soon, as chairman for North America, will be Stephen Harty, a longtime senior executive at American agencies like Doremus & Company, Merkley Newman Harty and Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide.

“We felt we would benefit from more wisdom and experience within the American context, and this guy’s full of it,” Mr. Jones said of Mr. Harty.

Harty probably made the big bucks when the firm he co-founded, Merkley Newman Harty, was sold to a larger company. But that’s a guess since I don’t know much about the economics of the ad business and there does not seem to be any public information on the deal. Younger Ephs interested in a career in advertizing should reach out to him.
