Mark Udall ’72 running for Senate

Mark Udall ’72 is running for Senate in Colorado. His history, from the site:
Udall was born July 18, 1950, in Tucson, Arizona, and has spent his entire adult life in Colorado. He graduated from Williams College in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in American Civilization. Udall developed a long and successful career with the Colorado Outward Bound School, as a course director and educator from 1975-85 and as the organization’s Executive Director from 1985-95.
I did not know there was such a degree at Williams. He sounds like a neat guy.
He says:
Our country is facing historic challenges at home and abroad. We must find a way to end the costly war in Iraq, rebuild our armed forces and fight a more effective war against terrorism. We must restore fiscal sanity to our national budget and prepare our kids for the economy of the future. We need a dramatic new energy policy that will create jobs and break our dependence on foreign oil. We also need to expand quality and affordable health care for all of our citizens.

Best wishes to Mark Udall.
It is not an enviable time to throw in your hat as a candidate for office these days. Between indifference and broker interests, how do you represent the people without disenfranchising them?
Trust is no longer tendered where deconstruction of our social order is working in earnest.
How he establishes direction and defines the campaign will be all telling.

By the way, if you are an Eph interested in politics or becoming a political writer, then a great way to get started is to make yourself the expert on a topic, especially a topic that no one else is already an expert on. Suggested topic: This senate campaign in Colorado. One way to do this is to create a blog devoted to this specific campaign. After a few weeks (and hard work), you would become the go-to source for the campaign, with all the latest news and analysis.

By the way, could one of our politically savvy Ephs handicap this race for us? What are Udall’s chances, both in the primary and the general election?

American Civilization is an outdated term for what is now most often called American Studies (which is now getting questioned as a term. anyway…). My mom got a degree in it around the same period.
As for the race, it’s important (a republican is vacating for an open seat) and Udall is the favorite. Looks like he’s most likely running against a conservative who might be too far right:

Mark looks pretty much the way he did in college, just greyer.
Am Civ was run by Prof. Frederick Rudolph ’42, who set up the program. Most of my classmates who majored in it went on to great success on Wall Street.
I surfed on over to Orvis.com and came close to finding the shirt, but it’s not an exact match. (The one Orvis is currently selling doesn’t have as much brown in it.) Of course, it could be LL Bean, another major Williams clothing provider.
I do like the “Click here” suggestion by driver–could be a way to generate some revenue for the site, similar to Amazon Associates. (Of course, David would be obligated to pass along all of the resulting revenue to the Williams Alumni Fund.)
