I am occasionally accused of making stuff up in a pathetic attempt at parody, especially when mocking the sacred purple cows of Williams today. Did I make this up?
The yellow stickers telling us to save energy are on just about every light switch in Dodd. I don’t really know what it’s like in other buildings, but in Dodd it’s really dangerous. The hallways and stairwells are pitch black. In the past few days I have fallen down/ tripped over steps more times than I should have. This has happened to other people as well. So, three things:
1) Before someone ends up in the hospital this month, can we please leave the lights on in stairwells?
2) Does this happen in other dorms?
3) Any other nonsense concerning do it in the dark?
No fair looking. By the way, the correct answer to #3 is that it is all nonsense . . .

All Williams students transfer from Williams to the most proximate college to one’s residence, and then restrict oneselves to walking, bicycling, public transportation and hitchhiking - it will save lots more energy than switching lights off and on.

Dodd has light switches at every single floor in the stairwell…so I don’t really get the complaint. It’s incredibly easy to turn the lights on when you’re in the stairwell and off when you leave–that’s what I’ve always done.

What’s the spin the first time someone falls down the unlighted stairs while groping for the light switch, or is attacked in a newly darkened corner?

Dear Hopeless:
Without darkness there would be no light. Without ignorance there would be no insight. Gentle steps throughout the night, we have come to understand your plight. So rather than give up the good fight, open your eyes with all your might. Do not fret nor fear, nor remain uptight, but learn and know that it is just right.

This arrangement also may be a health hazard, as well as non-green (is shredding considered to be less “green” than burning?) — Daily Messages Monday Nov. 5:
“Burning of old Alumni Directory books Alumni Relations has arranged to have old Alumni Directory books burned by a company in Pittsfield. If you have any old Alumni Directory books (which would be dated 1999, 2002 or older), please send them over to Deb LaPine, Mears House, by November 9th to be added to the group. Thank you. from Deborah A LaPine, Alumni Relations”
