Nice dissection of the WSJ article. Agree that the trader(s) in question are probably angling for top placement at a hedge fund.

"...but his participation in intercollegiate athletics frequently came under attack in the public discourse. Why is that?"

Because they aren't willing to grant it "educational" value. They think it is frivolous and mindless.

That said, I am on my way to a basketball game!

I make you $4 billion and all I get is $10 million?!? That's just --- hold on while I get out my trusty HP-12C --- 0.00025 of the total profits.

Maybe you should stop trusting your HP-12C. 0.25% of profits is bigger than the number you put there, by at least one decimal place, not to mention that this doesn't include the salary that presumes these people will be adding value to the company, and the (presumed) lack of similar percentage deductions should anyone lose the company a large sum of money.

As for how their activities make us better off, they remind us that some Williams alums are making more in a year than other Williams alums will make in a lifetime. Everyone needs a memento mori, right? I suppose it's worth noting that the rift at Williams between the haves and have-nots doesn't end at graduation.

On a lighter note, it also helps the rest of us by telling us how to make a healthy lunch fit for a millionaire.

No one ever accused my roommate who played viola in the school orchestra of spending too much time or placing too much emphasis on his musical endevour or editorship of the school paper but his participation in intercollegiate athletics frequently came under attack in the public discourse. Why is that?

Instead of arguing the role of this or that in collegiate life, why don't administrators and deans take a queue from the activites the students choose to participate in? In the late 1800's it was baseball and american football among countless others. In the late fiftes Rugby was the new extra-curricular student's chose.

I have friends, who in defense students' participation in athletics, have attributed some of their own success in their chosen profession to lessons and skills learned during their intercollegiate athletic experience. I have no reason to doubt them and many reasons to admire their accomplishments.

Funny, dynamic, energetic post, David!

It has a bit of "The Daily Show" in it. Not my area of interest normally...but this story does make one understand just how exciting Wall Street could be.

However, just as the wheels in my head were turning...anticipating coming up with some "jock-defending" comment about how Swenson's athletic endeavors could be given the credit for his powerful competitive spirt, you came up with this:

"I don't think that playing hockey gave this to Swenson. Instead that drive made him a better hockey player."

Interesting comment and "food for thought".

I have often wondered if Williams efforts to bring smart athletes into the school, were calculated on the recognition of the traits (that already exist in competitive types), that drive them to later financial success.

Many brilliant people don't give a hoot about making huge bucks. But if a school can produce grads that are driven to achieve academic laurels and grads that are driven to achieve financial success, they then have alumni that promote and sustain the school in all ways.

They make tons o'cash and contribute to the unrestricted fund of their college of choice. Said college then takes these "hard earned dollars" and contributes it to useless non profits. Those of us who live near those non profits indirectly benefit from the pornographic overpayment of local alumni.

I'm sure it all makes sense somehow.
