We are in the process of moving EphBlog to a different hosting company and switching to Wordpress from Movable Type for our blogging software. There will, no doubt, be teething pains. Apologies in advance for any difficulties, especially for authors trying to post new material. The process should be complete before the start of Winter Study.

David-
I know that reports of problems can be annoying and counter-productive. If we have problems, should we let you know or would you prefer for us to let you all work it out, undisturbed, until, say, the third? I hope the transition will go smoothly and that this question will turn out to be unnecessary.
As always, many thanks to you and Evan and the others for keeping the site going and contributing the effort it takes to improve the technology.

You mean to thank Eric.
Feel free to e-mail us. But even better is to post a comment (in this or any thread) when you see errors, mistakes or weirdness. This will allow others to chime in and confirm the problems, or to report that they see something different.
All feedback is much appreciated.

Very sorry. Thank you very much to Eric. I hope it doesn’t ruin your holiday weekend.

When does Winter Study start?
I have the book, but haven’t opened it yet.

Testing 1,2,3 Good luck with the transition. See you on the flip side.

So there the new look is. It doesn’t look terribly different but has some useful new features. It came up without any problems. Fingers crossed that the transition will continue smoothly.
Again, thanks for investing all the effort to make the changes possible.

After I hit “submit” I saw text that said something like “Your comment awaiting moderation.” There was a minor delay and then my comment posted. Those of you working on the transition may well have set the process to work that way and this is not a complaint – just a report about what happened.
December 29th, 2007 at 8:12 am& says:
Can’t tell for sure but right now it looks as though it may have dropped the comment I posted shortly after 8 AM. I posted two: one shortly after 8 and then one at 8:12 (which, as i write this, still has the “awaiting moderation” tag.

WordPress requires that commenters have one previously approved comment before they’re allowed to post with impunity, so it should be normal from now on.

It’s coming up fine now. Let’s see if this goes right through. I’m posting at about 6:15 PM, so we should be able to compare the times.
December 29th, 2007 at 3:15 pmAgain, thanks for your work.
& says:
Three hour time discrepancy (I’m on the East Coast, if that helps), but otherwise it seems to be working. That last post went right through.

Pictures (video link of Wendy and the Santa photo) aren’t visible, just a box with a small question mark in it.
The group of links that includes that to the collection of blogs (Planet Eph?) isn’t showing either. It used to be on the right, near the top.
You administrators probably see the same thing I do, but maybe not. I’m on a Mac and that sometimes gives me different results than PC users get.
No need to reply.
Posted at 8:14 PM, East Coast time.

While the color tone of the pages is nice (reminiscent of the color scheme of a really high end spa), I find the diagonal lines and the zig zag pattern a bit much. At the very least, recalibrate the colors of the body of the blog with the heading, as they clash bigtime: purples, blues, and red browns vs. soft greens and browns. Doesn’t matter which one wins, but at the moment they’re at visual war. Elicit help from the Williams Art Mafia to help you out.

Just trying this out, guys.
It will take some getting used to. As Guy said, it is very pale…
However, the comment box is nice…more spacious.
December 29th, 2007 at 8:36 pmFROSH mom says:
Aha, I get it…once you enter a comment, your moniker automatically registers the next time, no matter the subject.
Brilliant! And possibly a solution to the Anon problems?

Are youse morons finished with experimentally pushing all the buttons and twisting all the knobs? Aren’t youse yet ready to make one of youse’s periodic, predictably dumb comments suitable for incisively facetious, cynical or corrective response?

Re: Guy’s post #13 -
I’m not getting much in the way of color. The EphBlog header and photo remain as they were. The comment box is outlined in a light blue line. The rest looks to be black, white, and gray, “Comments” and the number of comments under each separate thread item on the main page were in red, but that and the blue outline line are the only color I see beyond the header.
I am posting at 7:19 AM on the East Coast, in case you are checking whether the time date-stamp is adjusted the way you want it.
As someone who has trouble remembering to add my signature, I like the new automatic signature feature.
Again, thanks tothe technical team.

I have almost no color, except at the top of the page… and a kind of muddy ochre/olive in titles. Also, the box lit up blue when I clicked into it.
Is this the end of “preview” possibilities?
Thanks for all the hard work…. however,
Frank is getting impatient……
December 30th, 2007 at 5:58 amSimmer down big guy…
Nothin good on the tube? How about some Proust?
& says:
I don’t have the muddy ochre/olive, or maybe I just see that as gray (could well be). The box didn’t light up blue for me, just shows a blue outline.
Frank, enjoy Williamstown before the dual storms of the returning students and forecasted heavy snows arrive. Too bad today’s basketball game is away, as I’m sure they’d appreciate having some spectators. Looks like another good team this year (undefeated so far, although it’s early days and the first-year stand-out was hurt in yesterday’s game against Lehman). I’m hoping for a Salem trip repeat of the Williams NCAA appearances of several years ago.

I had great difficulty even getting to the web site. Will try again later. I will be away anyway. A new film of mine is being screened at he Allied Social Science Association in New Orleans. So I will be out of things anyway.

Is there any way to change the font? Specifically, it would look nicer bigger–I think the current layout looks a bit cheaper than the one we had previously.
Additionally, is there any way to turn off the mail requirement? It kinda destroys the anonymity….
December 30th, 2007 at 10:08 amadmin says:
The current theme of the website is most likely temporary (it was chosen primarily because it’s easy to test on). Even if we decide to keep it, it’ll probably be altered substantially.

Details on your film? Will it be shown anywhere but New Orleans? Best of luck with the opening, and enjoy your trip.

To Admin:
Two bits of feedback:
When I posted last night, it took quite a few moments for the comment to come up.
And, topic above “Donors Choose”, sounds like David, but says posted by K.Thomas….as do many of the other topics.
You are probably aware of both of these things, but nevertheless, I thought I would let you know.

With aging eyes, I could use the text larger.
After the major app problems are sorted, the aesthetics might be considered: choice of colors, text face, and those dippy waves.
You are very brave to even attempt a server/app change of this magnitude! I have managed to live through Mac OS 4 to 10.4 and still hold my breath every time I have an ‘upgrade’. I just paid Mac $49.95 for on-line help because I lost my email (who knows why) but at least and at last, I got it back.
Good luck in this Brave New World and Happy New Year!

Dick,
One the font size issue, hitting CONTROL-(may be “Open Apple or ‘command’) plus the “+/=” key should increase the text size… there’s likely a “View…Text Size…” menu in your browser, as well.
December 31st, 2007 at 11:35 am& says:
The Apple key and the “+/=” key worked for me (and then the “_/-” key worked to take the size down a bit when I overdid the enlarging). Thank you for the tip.
Now that the text is bigger, I see that what I thought was gray is actually the ochre/olive reported by others.
To those of you who are struggling with the technical problems on behalf of all of us: thanks again. I’m looking forward to seeing the results. Let us know if we can help in some way.
And Happy New Year to everyone.
