Mother’s Name
Robbi Behr ‘97 is close to motherhood.
So, yesterday I had to go in and pre-register at the hospital for delivering this big fat baby of ours. I had a bunch of paperwork I was supposed to fill out beforehand, so I diligently went ahead and started working on it. It was asking for all kinds [...]

Continuing Discussion on Textbook Use
What began as a follow-up comment to our recent discussion about textbooks at Williams got rather long. As I confessed in that thread, this is a topic near and dear to my heart: I was a student on hefty financial aid, and while my parents would have paid for books or I could [...]

Breaking the Code
This interpretation of Obama’s recent speech (watch), by Chris Caldwell writing in the FT, presents an excellent analysis of the way I saw issues of race treated during my time at Williams College, and precisely highlights the problem with elite, liberal, mostly-white institutions like our college embracing ’sensitivity’ at the cost of communication - especially [...]

Ruthless, Clever Men
No such thing as bad press?
They have been lauded as the new masters of the universe, towering over mere mortals at rival banks. Two Goldman Sachs traders, Michael Swenson ['89] and Josh Birnbaum, are hot-shot heroes who made billions out of America’s sub-prime mortgage crisis. Or are they?
In an unusually breathless terms, the financial press [...]

Be Not Afraid
Most recent Eph to enter the priesthood? Jeff Ossinger ‘05.
Q: What would you say to a young man who thinks he may have a vocation?
A: “Be not afraid.” I echo these words of John Paul II, found throughout sacred Scripture, because I believe that fear is perhaps the greatest obstacle to entering the seminary. [...]

Erin Burnett Breaking News
She is coming on The Celebrity Apprentice on CNBC at this very moment.
I’m not in on the whole Erin craze or this show, but I happen to have heard her name flipping through and I sense some of you might really like to know this.

Textbook Profits
Via this interesting discussion on Crooked Timber comes the topic of professors and their textbook profits.
Since N. Gregory Mankiw returned to Harvard to teach the College’s introductory economics class, 2,278 students have filled his weekly lectures, many picking up the former Bush advisor’s best-selling textbook, “Principle of Economics” along the way.
So, what has professor of [...]

Constantine ‘69 Resigns
Rise with Spitzer, fall with Spitzer.
The self-destruction of Eliot Spitzer means a shake-up of the staffers managing one of his signature issues: higher education.
Definitely out: Lloyd Constantine.
Constantine, a former antitrust lawyer and close Spitzer friend, coordinated the higher education portfolio as the governor’s senior adviser. He handed in his resignation 10 minutes after Spitzer, effective [...]

Monkeys With Typewriters
Best (relatitively) new student publication at Williams? Monkeys With Typewriters.
Monkeys With Typewriters is a magazine of non-fiction essays.
We publish about twice a semester; the only requirements are
a length between 1100 and 1300 words, and that the
essay be non-fiction. We edit collaboratively, working with writers
to improve their essays and making sure nothing gets added
or deleted [...]

Smoke gets in your eyes (rev1) …
I submit this story not as political polemic but to ask the question in this time of increased drug surveillance, where does the President get what he’s smoking (and where can I get some)? Dark side of the moon in Hood River PS In keeping with doobie post and since I have been accurately identified as ‘impudent’, [...]

Basketball Recruiting
A reader asks:
Have you seen this? A few articles on the Harvard basketball coach and his apparent attempt to lower, or at least recruit below, the established academic standards.
Yes, I saw this story in the Times but it is tough to discern a direct Williams connection. One certainly hears rumors that, say, the Amherst mens [...]

Slippery Slope
Well-written article on global warming and the threat to regional winter activities.
Steve Sheppard, an economics professor at Williams College, said ski areas wouldn’t be the only casualties of a weakened winter-recreation season. Also compromised would be hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, restaurants and stores.
“It (would) have a significant impact on hospitality,” Sheppard said. (All) visitors spend a surprising amount [...]

Anjuli in Morocco
Want to know about life for an Eph Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco? Read this.
Yesterday each family in my town slaughtered a sheep (or two, in my family’s case) to commemorate the sacrifice of Ishmael (I know some you want to say, “Oooooh, Anjuli forgot; it was Isaac.” Not here it wasn’t.) Each house has [...]

Pre-Reunion Interview Podcasts
In celebration of the upcoming reunion and in order to drum up interest, I have arranged for Chris Gondek ‘90 to interview 10 members of both the classes of 1958 and 1988 for podcasts. Chris does this professionally at The Invisible Hand and has contributed links at EphBlog on occasion.
Basic idea is that Chris will [...]
