That was so much fun!!! Thank you, Chris and Dad! Girls, D’s and throwing up by the side of the road - I did not realize that my college experience mirrored my father’s so closely or at least in 2 out of 3 areas.

Highlights:
1) “Decent grades without much work” as a description of the Psychology Department in the 1950s. That’s totally different now! ;-)
2) Advice from the law school advisor: “If you had told me you didn’t want to study, I would have told you to be a Geology major!”
3) “The Deke House helped me grow up in lots of ways.” “Super parties at all times of the year.” How to recreate these desirable aspects of the fraternity scene are an on-going theme at EphBlog.
5) On the benefits of Williams: “Instantly recognizability of my undergraduate school among the East Coast law circles that I moved in.” You’re Aunt Sally will think you go to Williams and Mary, but the important people who make decisions about your life will know as much about Williams as they do about the Ivy League.
Listen to the whole thing. Especially the cow story at the end! Kudos to Chris and Dad on a great job.
And, by the way, if you are a member of the class of 1958 or 1988 who would like to be interviewed, send me an e-mail at dave at kanecap dot com. We need more volunteers.

Them were the days! There was one feature about the Deke house of the 50s, which I particularly fondly remember. Inside the front door of the house was a modestly sized table in the living room, which was used to receive incoming mail. On the table sat a small shaded lamp with two light bulbs - one white and one red. Usually the white one was lit, and the red one was dark. However, when a fraternity brother entered the house with a girl friend, his mother, his sister, his aunt or the like in tow (or such a guest was otherwise produced inside the front door), that or another brother would immediately flick off the white bulb and turn on the red one so that the brothers in the house might have an opportunity to alter their customary oral and other behaviours accordingly. Undoubtedly your correspondent needed the help of the red bulb more often than the typical brother.

Sometimes I think Ephblog might benefit from the white bulb/red bulb system ;)

I’m for “misplacing” the Ephblog white bulb.

Nice interview…and more evidence yet, that some things just don’t change. Funny image, those cows…
Best of all, was the fact that both his boys immediately came on to comment. Pretty sweet.
Chris, Larry: A secret signal, perhaps?
