Willful Blindness
An Eph Corner reader notes this.
I’m [Andy McCarthy] on a two-day road trip in beautiful Williamstown, talking Willful Blindness with the students of Williams College, so I’m missing my Corner buds. But I have to say I’d be blushing over Jonah’s kind words even if he hadn’t just written the most important (and best written) [...]

How to respond to a Tom Friedman appearance
Notorious windbag and NYTimes columnist (yes, I realize that’s redundant) Thomas Friedman has a fond relationship with Williams College, appearing multiple times over the last few years, even delivering the commencement address in 2005. I can’t find a transcript of that address online, but if you’d like to know what he said, you can create [...]

Williams Speaks Up
Not sure I like the capitalization but here is williamsSpeaksUp:
To advance cultural understanding and community engagement, Williams has established a Web site on which campus members can report and share incidents of unwanted, abusive, or harassing behavior. Over time, it will develop into a historical record, as a resource for dialog and education on [...]

Blown HHMI Grant?
A knowledgeable Eph writes:
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HMMI) is the largest private sponsor of science research in the country and, by far, the largest benefactor of science research at undergrad colleges. In the five multi-year cycles since 1991, Williams has never missed a major grant: 1991, 1993, 1996, 2000, 2004. In 2004, Williams received [...]

Eph Interview Podcast Class of 1958 Joe Young
For my money, one of the best things about both Ephblog and these podcasts is getting to know the men I like to call the “Eisenhower Ephs”, those members of classes from the 50’s. Here on Ephblog, we have the Shirley Temple like sunniness of Frank Uible and the dry wit of Dick Swart (Hope [...]

Requirements
Another interesting discussion from Morty’s visit to College Council.
President Schapiro said that the public speaking requirement failed by one vote in May 2001 when the writing requirement, quantitative reasoning, tripling of the number of tutorials were all passed. President Schapiro wanted to require tutorials and thought a public speaking requirement would be a way to [...]

Sexual Degradation
The Williams Center Collective is meeting tonight. I do not think that Williams needs a Women’s Center, but there are many useful feminist projects for Collective members to work on. Consider:
Having just returned from a Williams Preview, and seeing the way women are degraded in quote boards in common rooms, my guess is that this [...]

Picture of the Day
We hope you have noticed the recent addition to the EphBlog sidebar - the pictures are randomly drawn from over 2000 Williams-related photos on Flickr. Clicking through on these pictures will take you not only to some excellent photography, but snippets of life like the following from “stenz”:
Chadbourne on the Williams College [...]

CC Minutes 2008-04-16
Another comprehensive set of College Council minutes from Emily Deans ‘09. Note the discussion about Claiming Williams.
Shayla Williams (2009) proposed an idea at last month’s faculty meeting to have a half day of activity to promote claiming Williams, which would encourage students to engage in discussions about difference. This proposal came out of a subcommittee [...]

Reefer Madness
The Record highlights the consequences of a disturbing recent change in the College’s treatment of marijuana usage (emphases added):
Five Williams students will face court charges for marijuana possession on Thursday. These summons are in part due to a change in the College’s protocol regarding incidents of marijuana possession, which took effect last July.
Previously, the College [...]

Cretti ‘06 21st at Olympic trials
Sunday morning’s Olympic Trials in Boston were an excellent event. As it turned out, Michelle was not running, so Caroline Cretti was the only Eph participating. However, probably 40 Ephs were in the city to cheer her on. Many of them are in this picture; notable exceptions are Pete Farwell, Williams cross country and track [...]

Morass of Rules
Bethany McLean ‘92 on Wall Street whiners.
Given Wall Street’s meltdown, it comes as no surprise that many normally reasonable people would love to bind and gag the financial industry in red tape.
Politicians such as Representative Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and Senator Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) are calling for new rules. The Treasury has circulated a blueprint for [...]

Class of 1988 Podcast with Nicole Melcher
The latest in the 1988 Podcast series is with Nicole Melcher, College Council VP in 1987-88, fellow Kansan, and one my J.A.’s (I will hopefully be interviewing my other J.A., Lisa Mandl, quite soon) Talking to your J.A. for the first time in about 20 years is an intensely nostalgic experience, and what you are [...]

Million Dollar Meeting
A nice example of Spitzer sleaze from two years ago in the New York Sun.
A company under investigation by Eliot Spitzer’s office last year offered one of the attorney general’s closest friends, Lloyd Constantine ['69], $1 million to attend a single meeting with Mr. Spitzer in the hopes that his last-minute intervention would lead [...]

Lizard-like alien creature to visit Williams College
And he’s being sponsored by the Class of 1962. Have you no shame, Class of 1962?! We pray for the safety of our innocent undergraduates.

Olympic Trials Marathon profile: Caroline Cretti ‘06
Williams track coach Ralph White called Caroline Cretti “the greatest female distance runner in school history.” This Sunday, she will be racing the OT marathon in Boston alongside Michelle Rorke ‘06 and America’s top 161 other marathoners. Caroline has more All-American certificates than I could reasonably count up right now. Here is her profile on [...]
