Lots of athletics tid-bits over the last few weeks.
First, on the alumni front, several former Eph basketball players have been in the news: Mike Crotty ‘04 for his job with the NBA champion Celtics, and Casey Gibbons ‘06 for the basketball recruiting company he started. Also, check here for a nice feature on former Eph hockey star and current L.A. Kings Director of Amatuer Scouting Mark Yannetti ‘94. Finally, here is a nice story on former Eph All-American Track and Field athlete Dan Austin ‘06
Second, on the current Eph front, Eph football and lacrosse star Brian Morrissey ‘09 was one of the three featured speakers (along with New England Patriot Ben Watson) at the recent Boston Globe all-scholastic dinner, where he spoke to, among others Margie Fulton ‘12. In addition, here is an inspiring article about Eph rower Bianca Czaderna ‘11
Third, several recent features on star athletes in the class of 2012: Karyn Moss and Will Petrie.

Thank you, Jeff.
And some of the men’s crew are racing at the Henley: http://williams.prestosports.com/sports/mcrew/2007-08/news/0621_Eph_pick_up_a_2nd_-_3rd_on_first_day_of_racing_in_Great_Britain

In addition, Lindsay Payne ‘06 will be competing in the Olympic Trials for swimming next week. She is seeded 6th in the 100 breaststroke. Preliminaries and semi-finals are on Monday and finals will be Tuesday night (on USA, I believe) if she makes it. The 200 breaststroke is Thursday-Friday.

Cole - Please come back and let us know how she does.
Also, track and field trials are going on, aren’t they?
June 27th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Larry - they are indeed, starting today and going through July 6 (no events the 1st and 2nd). The Trials are being held in Tracktown, USA (aka Eugene, OR where I went to law school). There at Hayward Field the first Nikes were born and Steve Prefontaine helped inspire a huge national interest in tracke & field.
Go here for all the info generally about the extravaganza in Eugene, and go here for the schedule of events, and finally here for the broadcast TV coverage schedule.
There may be more coverage on other specialized networks, since it appears the NBC networks are only giving a couple of hours here and there. Given that much of any track meet is sitting around waiting, I hope their little 1 and 2 hour pieces are good.
Can you tell I am excited about this?! My law school was literally across the street from the track, and from some of the study rooms on the fourth floor of the library, you could look over at the track. It is a wonderful setting, and a great time to be in Eugene. And yes, I am currently lamenting not being home in Oregon!! Moving to DC for awhile certainly seemed like a good idea at the time….

Thanks, JG. Too bad you aren’t in Eugene to give us on-the-scene reports (and enjoy it yourself).
June 27th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Well I just got off the phone with my parents, and they managed to score 1-day passes for tomorrow (helps to have a friend that’s a sports writer)!! I’ll pass along whatever reports I get from them.

Re post #s 2 and 3: Ms. Payne is 12th after the prelims, so will be swimming in the semis tonight (top 16) — along with three of her current CA teammates.
Wishing her strength and a good swim.

In rowing news, both the Williams and the Trinity men qualified to complete for the Temple Cup at the Henley. It looks as though Trinity advanced in the first round but Williams did not (they were not racing directly against each other). After winning the Women’s Henley earlier in the month, the Trinity women had bad luck and broke an oar in the time qualifier for the women’s event at the Henley and failed to qualify — a great crew that had a wonderful run before this happened.
I think that Lindsay Payne still has the first round for the 200 M breaststroke to go today before racing again in the next round of the 100 M breaststroke.

Too bad about the Trinity rowers.
Lindsay Payne swims in the 100 breaststroke semifinals tonight; if she places in the top 8, she’ll swim in the 100 finals Tuesday night. Then she’s off until Thursday morning, when she competes in the 200 breaststroke prelims (200 semis are then Thursday night, with finals scheduled for Friday pm).

Thanks. The schedule I had was really confusing.
Good luck to Lindsay.
Any word on Dan Austin ‘06, the Williams discus thrower?

Forget about what I said about the men’s rowing — I was right that both the Williams and Trinity men did qualify, but it seems that they race on Wednesday and the sheet I saw may have been the odds, not the results. May there always be an England….

An update: Lindsay Payne really worked hard to earn her spot in tomorrow’s 100 breaststroke final — she tied for the 8th and final place during semifinals and won the swim-off (another full 100-meter swim) by .02 (two one-hundredths) of a second.
Wishing the best for her at finals.

Two amazing races for Lindsay Payne. In the swim off, she was just a quarter of a second slower than she was in the semifinal less than an hour earlier and just got her hand on the wall first. She’ll be in the finals Tuesday night on the USA network between 8 and 9 eastern.

Okay, not Williams but I have to brag: an all-Oregon sweep of the men’s 800, all kicking coming around the last turn into the straightaway. It was amazing.
The winner was a Division III runner named Nick Symmonds from Willamette University who surprised everyone, so it was a nice moment for Div. III as well.

Wow, amazing, congrats. Of course after racing twice last night and having several seconds to make up, it would take a minor miracle (or maybe not so minor) to make the top two, but finishing in the top eight swimmers in the country, any age group, is just an incredible accomplishment …
