“I am sad to report the death on July 16 of a dear friend of Williams–Florence Chandler. Florence added to the life of the college in countless ways as her husband, John, served as faculty member, president, and president emeritus. She brought to the Williams family her delightfully Southern elegance, intelligence, and charm. In 1995 the College awarded her an Ephraim Williams Medal for exceptional dedication to Williams by a non-alumnus. The Class of 1945 Florence Chandler Fellowship, awarded each year to a senior to support one year of post-graduate intellectual and personal development while living abroad, is named in her honor. We miss her already as our thoughts and prayers are with John and their children: Alison ‘76, John, Patricia, and Jennifer.”

Florence Gordon Chandler, 83, of Williamstown died Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Berkshire Place in Pittsfield. Born in Pittsboro, N.C. on Feb. 18, 1925, a daughter of Richard Gordon and Gladys Seawell Gordon, she attended schools in Pittsboro and graduated from the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina.
Mrs. Chandler was employed as the Director of Education at Watts St. Baptist Church in Durham, N.C. and later was the Assistant Dean of Women at Wake Forest University. She moved to Williamstown with her husband, John W. Chandler, when he was appointed to the Williams College faculty…
She leaves her husband, president emeritus of Williams College, whom she married on August 25, 1948; one son, John W. Chandler Jr. of Longmeadow; three daughters, Alison Chandler of Brooklyn, N.Y., Patricia Chandler Finn of Deering, N.H.; and Jennifer Chandler of Pittsfield; five grandchildren, Lydia Finn, Emily Finn, Christopher Chandler, Owen Marks, and Thomas Chandler; and one sister, Ruth Averitt of Raleigh, N.C.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Florence Chandler will be held Thursday July 24, 2008 at 2 P.M. at the First Congregational Church in Williamstown, with Rev. Carrie Bail, Pastor, officiating. Private burial will be in the Williams College Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to Williams College for the Class of 1945 Florence Chandler Fellowship, Williams College Vogt House, 75 Park St. Williamstown, MA 01267.
