It’s Oscar time again …
Posted by Dick Swart under 1 at 5:51 pm

I now, I know – what’s that go to do with Williams?
Every well brought-up alum knows about Elia Kazan and John Frankenheimer. But how many know that Charles Brackett ‘15 won three Oscars for screenwriting (Lost Weekend/1945, Sunset Boulevard/1950, and the Clifton Webb 1953 Titanic), or that he won a lifetime achievement award from the Academy in 1959, or that he was president of the Academy from 1949 to 1955?
I thought so!
So here is a sporting contest for cineasts, auteur-admirers, and those who aren’t going to wait for the Netflix release. How many winners can you pick from the Big Six?

PTC-
Had I neglected you as a winner of the Hopkins and the Log contest? My heart was in my mouth as I braved the dust and mouse turds to rummage through the EphBlog archives under the Williamstown Sewage Treatment Plant. No. I hadn’t been guilty of negligence,
But the winner whose prize is still in the vault of the Hood River Pear and Apple Sorters Bank is NUTS. Without a mailing address, the surfer sits neglected in his plastic shell.
NUTS, please contact me so that your writing may swell to the levels of your co-winners – Sophmom, Rory, and Ronit

What about John Sayles? Any Academy awards connected to his work? I’m just reading about him in the book that was recommended by Wick Sloane, titled Uncommon Genius, which focuses on winners of the MacArthur Award…very good read, BTW.
Okay. my picks:
Best Picture: Slumdog Milionaire (It is magical. I’ve seen it twice already.)
Best Director: Danny Boyle
Best Actor: Frank Langella (wonderful performance and movie)
Best Actress: Kate Winslet (Because she really should have been nominated for Revolutionary Road)
Supporting actor: Heath Ledger (haven’t even seen this, but my guess is that the Academy will want to pay tribute to Ledger)
Supporting actress: Marisa Tomei

Sophmom -
The recognitions given to John Sayles ‘72 do not include the Oscars. I don’t think this is unusual in the Land of Oscar and Big Bucks Talking. Please, please tell me I am wrong! The Return of the Secaucus 7 and its’ reunion theme is thought to be the inspiration for The Big Chill.
Another filmmaker who’s work totals 30 films is the esteemed documentary maker, Frederick Wiseman ‘51 (same class as John Frankenthaler). His lifetime of works has been honored http://www.zipporah.com/wiseman but Oscar may be elusive and. compared with his work, an inconsequential recognition.
I wonder if Henry Bass has ever worked with Wiseman? Henry, if you are reading this, anything to share about this iconic figure?
Thank your for entry, Sophmom!

Sayles has been nominated (I think for Lone Star, great flick) but hasn’t won. There is one other Eph connection to this year’s nominees — one of my classmates is the manager (or perhaps publicist, but I think the former, maybe both) for Michael Shannon — who is a filthy good actor, by the way, just see Bug if you don’t believe me.
My picks:
Best Picture: Slumdog, I wasn’t as huge a fan as everyone else, but it is a feel good story in a time where that is really neded
Director: Boyle
Actor: Rourke (although I agree Langella was awesome, great movie too)
Actress: Hathaway
Supporting Actor: Ledger (and I think wholly deserved regardless of his death playing a role)
Supporting Actress: Davis

Great Post Mr. Swart. I’ll do my homework and make my picks.

Test post. Haven’t seen everything in any category. Frost/Nixon was a blast– I’ve got to find out if Frost actually had the $300K in his account, when he wrote the check.

I haven’t seen everything yet, and they actually nominated a lot of movies I want to see this year (shocking since much of the year felt a little thin on good movies). Here are my best guesses. I’m torn between saying who I hope and who I actually think will win, hence the commentary.
Picture: Slumdog Millionaire (I haven’t seen it yet, but that seems the general impression. Milk is also worthy, and Frost/Nixon feels unlikely despite how good it is)
January 25th, 2009 at 10:24 amDirector: Danny Boyle
Actress: Kate Winslet (likely since she never wins and had two big movies this year – I’m partial to Anne Hathaway).
Supp. Actress: Amy Adams (have only seen one movie on the list and it isn’t Doubt, but I have hear raves about her and Viola Davis so I flipped a coin)
Actor: Frank Langella (tough category, but I’m happy if anyone but Brad Pitt gets it b/c the movie just wasn’t that good; I loved Sean Penn in Milk as well and thought it was something different for him)
Supp. Actor: Heath Ledger (will get it b/c he died, should have gotten it for Brokeback but still deserves it here. Josh Brolin was also amazing in Milk and should have been nominated for No Country last year.)

frank, she going to win because they have a good coach, they play team ball, and she’s a Uible.

Frank Langella Fans-
CBS Sunday Morning did a very nice feature on him this am. He is truly an actor who has aged well and with astounding grace and skill. From matinee idol in Diary OAMH/1970, through Dracula in the Gorey production in 1977, and Nixon both on stage and in the nominated movie!
( Cyrano in 1970 and 1981 at WTF on stage at the old AMT)
In a separate but related story, earlier last year, Rechtal Turgidley Jr revealed to ephblog that he is writing his memoir “Growing up Turgidley”. That announcement produced quite a stir and the book has been optioned by a major studio (no names, please).
In an early morning phone call after the CBS program, agent Ari Gold of Miller Gold revealed that Frank Langella is being sought to play the role of Rechtal Turgidley Sr ‘28. Very off the record and for ephblog readers only, guess who is being considered to play Rechtal Turgidley, Jr? Could it be an actor who’s initials are LDC?
You heard it here first!
January 25th, 2009 at 1:44 pmfrank uible says:
Undoubtedly based upon similarity of physiognomy, it should be Brad Pitt.

Dick:
What about “The Graduate”? Didn’t it win an Academy award of some kind? Not sure if Webb wrote the screenplay, but it was based on his book after all (a bit of lore I learned right here on Ephblog)!
P.S. Very happy for Rech, but cannot figure out whose initials are LDC. How about a clue? Does he look like a younger version of Langella?
January 26th, 2009 at 1:42 amDick Swart says:
Hint: Leonardo D ……. ?
Charles Webb. An indirect Oscar to me as I am thinking of more immediate relationship to the screen like Charles Brackett
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Webb
Hove. The next town up from Brighton. Kind of like Winchelsea to Rye. In the shadow of a famous neighbor. Or, come to think of it, like me to Rechtal Turgidley, Jr. While casting me has not yet been bruited about, I was thinking of Brad Pitt, particularly for the money shot.

On second guess, I am liking JG’s picks better than my own. I haven’t seen Doubt, but Amy Adams has gotten raves, and tons of press.

Slumdog will also take both music categories. Benjamin Button will be shut out of everything except maybe costuming, editing, and makeup.

The judges are comparing the entries of the eight blogists who participated in the Oscar predictions.
After first read-thru with sleep-bleared eyes, it appears no one got them all correct. This means the labor-and-coffee-intensive process of #2 Eberhard Faber on Hammermill yellow legal must be employed.
When completed (feet will not be held to the fire) a suitable post will be prepared
Further more, To all entrants and the world in general:
SEAN PENN, SEAN PENN, SEAN PENN, SEAN PENN, SEAN PENN, SEAN PENN, SEAN PENN!
