EphBlogger spotted on C-SPAN
Posted by Ronit under Academia, General, Alumni, Derek Charles Catsam '93, Race at 11:45 pm
Derek Catsam ’93 speaks about the fight to desegregate trains, buses, and other modes of public transportation. The talk is part of a Civil Rights panel discussion that was held during this year’s Virginia Festival of the Book. Professor Catsam’s book on the Freedom Riders is entitled Freedom’s Main Line, and is available from your nearest online bookstore (such as this one or this one).

Longtime readers may remember the Red Sox book Derek mentioned at the very beginning of his talk, Bleeding Red: A Red Sox Fan’s Diary of the 2004 Season, which was based on a series of EphBlog posts. In the words of one SNL cast member, this earlier work by Professor Catsam is “a great way to remember the best year in the history of mankind or any other species.”

What a pleasure! You’re a wonderful speaker, Derek…which does not come as a surprise. ;-)
Thanks, Ronit. (I would like to learn how to post something like this…cropping and timing it in the way that you did.)

One of Derek’s books, Freedom’s Main Line, is featured in “From the Bookshelf” in the September issue of the Williams Alumni Review.

Jr Mom- I remember the 86 Red Sox season well…
I was hanging around a frat house at Union College when the Mets hit went through the first baseman’s legs… that same year prior, when the Sox won the Pennant, I was in Kenmore square when the mounted police came in and they broke up the crowd that was trashing cars and climbing light posts….
That year was strange… 85 to 86. Boston teams were in the Stanley Cup, the World series, the NBA finals, and the Superbowl. Boston lost in every one of those events… the final great years of the celtics.
I used to go watch Roger Clemens play… I was there when he got 19K in one game… Fenway was an amazing place to bring a date. Such memories in Boston sports. Tending bar it was not optional to have a Boston game on. Man, Boston was a good time!
Derek says:
Thanks so much Ronit. I’ve been out of town, but appreciate the publicity!
Am in Boston and plan to enjoy the Patriots game today with a friend and libations in Cambridge.
